IMDB # Rotten Tomatoes

This story is very different from the original one , it is an exciting and catchy plot. As a reader you can hardly wait to find out what happens next.
The Roald Dahl's variant of the "Cinderella" is like a reality show compared to the original fairy tale .
First of all the prince is more rude than in the original story and he is cruel with people who he disagrees. One of the spicy ingredients of modern films is violence, altogether with language ( the prince called Cinderella a ''dirty slut'')  and nudity,  as in the scene when her dress was ripped off from head to toe. In conclusion the modern version of Cinderella is a hilarious one, but inappropiate for kids.
Moreover, Cinderella chose to marry an ordinary man who was kind, simple, joyful . The choice was not a prince , which is very different from the original story and also from fairy tales in general .

Warnings about films ;

This film contains : - drug abuse/ violence/ language / nudity  ....

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK

A huge difference between the original story and this one is the beanstalk itself : in the first one it was the way to fortune, in the modern one it is fortune in itself ( golden leaves)....

Continue with differences between the initial one and this version mentioning some modern traits , too.

Exam CARD 1

Read the following text and answer the questions:

Mrs. Spears, an office cleaner from Chicago, arrived at work one cold, winter morning. The temperature was very low and it was beginning to snow. Hurrying to go inside and get warm, she was surprised to see something large and still outside the office door. She looked closer and was shocked to discover it was a cat frozen to the ground. “It gave me a real fright!” Mrs. Spears realized the cat was alive but unable to move so she wrapped him up in her coat. When the office workers came later, they too put their coats around the cat. Eventually he started to move and opened his eyes. They took him inside the office, put him near a heater, and gave him some warm milk to drink. Now he lives in the office and has a new name, “Lucky”.

The text is about a woman who found a frozen cat and she saved it.

2. What was the cat doing when Mrs. Spears arrived at work?

3. Why is the cat’s name Lucky?

The cat's name is Lucky because it had a lucky escape.

4. Do you think pets are toys? Give arguments to support your opinion

In my opinion pets are not toys because they are alive, have feelings, react to our actions. They need to be treated as partners because they also take care of us.

EXAM CARD 2

Read the following text and answer the questions:

The British spend their free time in different ways. People generally use it to relax, but many people also do voluntary work, especially for charities.

A lot of free time is spent in the home, where the most popular leisure activity is watching television, the average viewing time being 25 hours a week. People often record programmes on video so that they can watch later, and video recorders are also used for watching videos hired from a video rental shop. Reading is also a favourite way of spending leisure time. The British spend a lot of time reading newspapers and magazines.

In the summer gardening is popular, and in winter it is often replaced by “do-it-yourself”, when people spend their time improving or repairing their homes. Many people have pets to look after; taking the dog for a daily walk is a regular routine.

Families often have a “day out” at the weekend, especially in summer, with a visit to a local event such as a festival, fair or show. Young people especially go to clubs and discos, while people of all ages go to the theatre, the cinema, art exhibitions and concerts.

(learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org)

EXAM CARD 3

Read the following text and answer the questions:

For many people today it is difficult to imagine a life without a cell phone. Once the preserve of the rich, they have now become an indispensable part of modern day life. The technology for cellular phones was patented in 1975, but it wasn’t until 1982 that the first commercial cell phone network was established in the United States. Since that time, the cell phone has changed from a bulky machine to something that can fit into the palm of your hand. The functions available in modern-day cell phones are increasing rapidly. Email access is now standard. Cell phone cameras now rival digital cameras in terms of quality. With third generation telephones, broadband access offers the possibility of video phones, television and full internet access. All this comes at a cost, however. Many people disagree with a society where people seem to be glued to their phone, but forget everything that is going on around them.

the preserve of the rich= apanajul bogatului / permisibil doar bogatului

indispensable = indispensabil

bulky = masiv / indesat

1. What is the text about?

The text is about the development of cell phones.

2. What were the first cell phones like?

The first cell phones were some bulky machine.

3. What are the advantages of third generation cell phones?

The advantages of third generation cell phones are that you have video phones, television and full internet access in the same device.

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a mobile phone? Give arguments to support both sides of the statement.

Having a cell phone has both advantages and disadvantages.  You can contact anyone any time but in the same time you can be contacted  any time. You can find information in a few seconds although this can slow down our thinking. On one hand you can take clear photos and record videos but, on the other hand, you will spend too much time on it. :)

LEFT 4 / 2015

Time clauses

Future time clauses are introduced by conjunctions such as after, as soon as, before, till, until, when, whenever, while or time expressions such as the minute, the moment etc.
We do not use the future tense (will) in a time clause to describe future activities (in this respect, it is similar to if clauses).

Compare:
I'll come back home and I'll do it. x I'll do it when I come back home. (when I come is the time clause)
You will push this button and the door will open. x As soon as you push this button the door will open.
Don't stand up. First I'll tell you. x Don't stand up till (until) I tell you.
You'll need my car. Take it. x Whenever you need my car you can take it.
You'll tidy up the house and I'll do the shopping. x You'll tidy up the house while I do the shopping.
You will drop the bomb and it will explode. x The moment you drop the bomb it will explode.

Similarly, other future forms also change to the present simple tense.
He is going to leave. The room will be empty. x As soon as he leaves the room will be empty.
We are moving next week. Then we'll call you. x When we move next week we'll call you.

If we describe an action that is happening at the same time as another future action (the two activities are simultaneous), we use the present continuous in time clauses.
We are going to cut the grass. You'll pick the apples. x While we are cutting the grass you'll pick the apples.

The future perfect simple and continuous become the present perfect simple and continuous.
I'll have finished my grammar exercises in ten minutes. Then I'll go out. x After I have finished my grammar exercises I'll go out.
They will have repaired our car by the weekend. And we will go for a trip. x As soon as they have repaired our car we will go for a trip.

Be careful!
If when introduces a noun clause which is the object of a verb, it is followed by a future tense.
I don't know when she will arrive. I can't remember when the race will start. You must decide when you will meet them.
In all these sentences the question is: What? not When? (I don't know what, I can't remember what, You must decide what.)
